Pretty, Easy DIY Nail Art for Summer
Why be boring when you can go bold this summer? Wow with these nail designs.

-
Abstract
Cloudy skies inspired the design for Manish Arora, says MAC Cosmetics artist Keri Blair.
The Paints: You'll need three: a light, medium and dark opaque in the same color family—we chose teals.
Your Canvas: Starting at cuticle bed, use darkest color to cover 1/3 of nail. Paint tip with lightest shade, leaving center bare.
Finishing Touch: While polish is still wet, dab medium color in middle with brush, blending toward tip and base. Clean brush with remover; repeat on all nails.
-
Minimalist
As seen at Rodarte: a fresh take on the French by Sally Hansen manicurist Tracylee.
The Paints: A pale pink opaque base and silver for tips. Or mix it up and use a different metal for each tip.
Your Canvas: Layer two coats of pink base over nail. Repeat on all nails; let dry completely.
Finishing Touch: Open metallic, wipe excess off brush, then glide polish from one edge of tip to other, keeping thickness to no more than 1/8 inch. Repeat on all nails.
-
Modern
Nail pro Heather Davis of CND says her look for Creatures of the Wind is like "sporty graffiti."
The Paints: Base and top coat, white polish and three bright nail-art pens or fine permanent markers
Your Canvas: On all nails, apply base coat, two layers of the white polish, then top coat. Let dry fully.
Finishing Touch: On left half of nails, draw one or two tight squiggles from base to tip with each pen, letting lines overlap.
-
Impressionist
So MoMA! At Rebecca Minkoff, Michelle Saunders for Essie played with movement.
The Paints: Three metallics (here: gold, rose gold, silver) plus a shimmer and solid of a bold color, like purple
Your Canvas: Use a toothpick to dab two or three dots of each shade onto one nail until nail is covered.
Finishing Touch: Swirl dots of wet polish with a small paint or lipliner brush, moving in loose S waves from tip to base. Repeat on all nails.
-
Fair Feathered
Paint two coats of a polish that contains featherlike fibers. We used Nails Inc. Feathers in Brighton, $10.
-
Cool Jewels
DIY project! Buy tiny studs; set onto still-tacky polish using a wood cuticle stick. (Lick it so it grabs stones.)
-
Ooh La Lace
Trim the thinnest, most delicate lace you can find to fit nails, then press on two minutes after your top coat.
-
True Grit
This polish (OPI Liquid Sand in Jinx, $9) feels like, well, sand when it dries. Paint two thin coats—superthick ones can peel.
-
Color Block
Paint nail yellow. An hour later, cover lower-left triangle with tape. Add pink; remove tape quickly.
-
Tulip Tip
Go ahead and let polish get on your skin as you paint corners pink. Clean it up with a cotton swab soaked in remover.
-
Mod Moon
Polish nails yellow. Once dry, use a binder hole reinforcement as a moon stencil; paint orange inside it.
-
Borderline
Paint nail purple; once dry, use an eyeliner brush to swipe an opaque orange (like Orly in Mayhem Mentality, $9) around outside edges.
-
Street Legal
Apply each CK One Street Edition Real Nail Polish Strips in Graffiti, $12, like a sticker: Remove backing and press on nail. Buff off excess.
-
Foiled Again
You'll need: Ciaté Very Colourfoil Manicure kit, $19. Paint nail, dot on glue (it's included), apply foil sheet (also in there) and rip off.
-
Pow! Wow!
Purple, first. Once dry, use clear tape to create the zigzag, then paint the magenta. Repeat with silver.
