In this tutorial I'll attempt to summarize Andrew Loomis'south arroyo to drawing the head. Information technology's a corking method for drawing the caput from various angles.

The Basic Forms
To draw the head from any angle you must commencement understand its basic construction. Look past all the distracting details and visualize the underlying forms. This ability to simplify tin exist applied to the features of the face, but when starting the cartoon you could look even further. Ignore even the features and simplify to the most basic class of the caput. I use a method taught by Andrew Loomis in his volume, "Drawing the Caput & Hands".
The head deconstructed into its basic forms, is asphereequally the attic and ablock as the jaw and cheek basic.

A Sphere as the Cranium
The sides of the caput are flat, and so we tin slice off a slice from both sides of the ball. From profile, this airplane will be a perfect circle, merely when drawing it from any other bending, it volition appear to be an oval considering of perspective. Carve up this oval into quadrants. The vertical line represents the beginning of the jaw. The horizontal line represents the brow line. The height and bottom of the oval aid y'all find the hair line and the bottom of the nose.

A Cake as the Jaw and Cheek Bones
Attach the shape of the jaw. The top will kickoff at the forehead line and the back will get-go at the center of the oval. This is a 3-D book with a front plane, side planes, and bottom plane (bottom plane is seen from some angles).

Constructing From Any Angle
Step 1 – Decide the bending of the ball
The angle of the caput is established at the very beginning of the drawing with the ball. All three axes must be addressed:
X Axis – The up and downwardly tilt is established past the angles of the horizontal and vertical lines in the oval. Likewise, on farthermost up tilts and down tilts, the thirds volition exist foreshortened because of perspective.

Y Axis – The direction the head is turning (left or right) is established by the width of the oval. As the head turns towards you, you tin see more of the forepart of the confront and less of the side, and so the oval representing the side volition get narrower. Similarly, when the head turns away from yous, more than of the side airplane is revealed and the oval volition announced wider.

Z Axis – The twist is established past the angle of the center line, the angle of the oval and the placement of the oval on the ball.

Step 2 – Find the thirds
After establishing the angle of the ball, divide the confront into thirds. The distance between the hairline and brow-line should be the same as the distance between the brow-line and lesser of the nose. Add that same distance to find the chin. Notice how the hairline and nose-line marshal with the meridian and lesser lesser of the oval when wrapped around the face. Imagine the head as a box. The thirds must be wrapped around the side plane and front plane.

Footstep 3 – Add the jaw
A mutual mistake at this point is to make the jaw as well long in comparison to the brawl. Make sure to measure your thirds correctly and that they relate correctly to the ball. Notice how the shape of the jaw changes from various angles.

Step 4 – Add the features
ith this basic structure properly established, information technology becomes much easier to add the features in the right place.Check back for more data about specific features in a later post.

Practise inventing the head from all possible angles. Become a sketchbook and fill an entire folio with little heads. When cartoon without reference photos, yous quickly realize where your weaknesses are because you can't rely on copying. Y'all tin only work with what yous know.
